The brochure sells the van. The chassis, the roof seal and the build plate tell you what it really is.

Dealers read vans every day; most buyers read one every ten years. This system gives you the same checks the trade already uses — in words you can test with a torch in the yard.

What readers who applied it say

The salesman told us it was this year's model. I did what Volume II said and found the build plate under the passenger step. It was stamped 2 years earlier. I didn't argue with him, I just asked why. The price conversation changed after that.

We looked at 3 vans on one Saturday. On the third I ran my hand along the fresh paint like the book shows and felt the filled rivet holes from the hire-fleet decals. We walked away from that one and slept on the decision.

I'm 71 and not a mechanic. The 4 checks in Volume III are things I could actually do: torch on the chassis rail, press the ceiling corners, look at the tyre dates, read the plate. For the first time I felt I was reading the van and not the salesman.

Barry Motorhomes

I'm Barry. I spent most of my working life around vehicles and, after I retired, around caravan parks and dealer yards from Geelong to Townsville. I bought my own first motorhome the hard way: a lovely looking van that had sat in a yard long enough for the tyres to flat-spot and a roof corner to go soft after its first real storm. Nobody lied outright. They just didn't mention it. Since then I've crawled under a lot of vans with a torch, read a lot of build plates and sat at a lot of kitchen tables with couples working out what they'd really paid. The same handful of problems kept showing up. I wrote them down because the people asking me were careful, sensible folk who simply hadn't been shown where to look. That's all this is: where to look.

Why I Put This Down on Paper

Most of the people who ask me about motorhomes have worked their whole lives for this trip. They've sold the family home or saved for years, and now they're standing in a yard being told a van is this year's model, freshly built, a sound investment. Some of that is true. Some of it isn't, and the trade usually knows which. I didn't write these books to tell you which van to buy. I wrote them so you can look at any van and see what's actually in front of you: how old it really is, where it came from, how it was built, whether water has been getting in and what it's likely to be worth later. None of it is secret. It's just never been laid out in one place, in plain words, for the person holding the chequebook. That's you. Take your time, take a torch, and read the van first.

Frequently asked questions

I can find free buying advice online, and every source contradicts the next. Why is this more reliable?+
Because it doesn't ask you to trust an opinion. Every check in these books is something you can see for yourself: a date on a plate, a soft patch in a ceiling, rust on a chassis rail, a date code on a tyre. The van answers the question, not me.
Is this a list of the best motorhomes to buy?+
No. There's no ranking and no wish list, and nobody paid for a mention. It's a method for reading any van, new or used, whatever badge is on the front.
I'm not mechanical. Will I be able to do these checks?+
Yes. Every check is written for someone with a torch, a notepad and a bit of patience. Where a technical term appears, it's translated into what you look for and where.
Will this tell me how much money I'll save?+
No, and be wary of anyone who promises that. What it does is help you understand depreciation, build dates and condition before you sign, so the number you agree to is based on what the van actually is.
I already own a motorhome. Is this still useful?+
Yes. The chapters on depreciation, rebadging and dealer stock explain why trade-in offers can land well below expectations, and the checks help you know your own van's condition before you talk to anyone about selling.
Does it cover what's legal to fit and carry in Australia?+
It covers weight, licence limits and the kinds of fittings that can cause trouble with insurers, so you can ask the right questions. It never recommends fitting anything that isn't compliant, and for specific cases you should confirm with your state authority and insurer.
